Description

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“A person follows the religion of their close friend, so each of you should carefully choose whom you befriend.”
(Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi;)
This hadith highlights the powerful role that companionship plays in shaping a person's character, beliefs, and direction in life. We influence those around us, and they influence us.

Although the hadith specifically speaks about close friends, its lesson extends to everything we surround ourselves with. Today, our "companions" are not only people, but also the media we consume, the books we read, the content we watch, the voices we listen to, the communities we join, and the habits we practice every day. These constant influences quietly shape our minds, hearts, values, and actions—for better or for worse.

For this reason, every Muslim should regularly evaluate both who and what they allow to influence them. We should often ask ourselves:
"Is this bringing me closer to Allah, or pulling me away from Him?" 

Making wise choices about our companions and our daily influences, together with regular self-reflection, is one of the greatest means of remaining steadfast on the Straight Path, by the permission of Allah.
